List of supermarkets

Price Chopper

Price Chopper is a chain of supermarkets, based in upstate New York. The chain began as "Central Market" in Schenectady, New York in 1933, and changed to Price Chopper in 1973. The Golub Corporation is the parent company of Price Chopper.

In 1933 Russian Immigrants Bernard and William Golub opened their first Central Market in Schenectady, NY. It was a success and they continued to open many more stores in the region. In 1943 the Golub brothers bought out Joseph Grosberg and formed the present parent company, the Golub Corporation. In 1951 they were one of the first grocery chains in the country to issue the well known S&H Green Trading Stamps. In the fall of 1973 Central Market, which had spread to several states in the Northeast, changed their operating strategy. They dropped the Green stamps, slashed their prices, and to reflect this new strategy Central Market changed its name to Price Chopper. Since then Price Chopper has continued to grow, opening new stores and upgrading old ones. In 2005 the chain, still privately owned (with stock valued at $53.50/share) began an aggressive campaign to expand into Connecticut where it now operates six stores.

The Golub Corporation is headquartered in Schenectady, NY and is run by Lewis and Neil Golub. Price Chopper supermarkets range from convenience store style Mini Choppers to full service Super Centers. All of the Price Choppers are serviced from the same warehouse in Schenectady, NY. Golub Corporation is the number one employer in the Capital District of New York, with philanthropist Neil Golub a well known and generally liked figure in the region.

In November 2005, Price Chopper employees will be changing to khaki-colored uniforms.
